This exceptional 1989 Land Rover 90, powered by the unmistakable character of the Rover V8, has undergone a complete ground-up transformation by LUCARI Designs a build defined not only by craftsmanship, but by intent. Every component has been considered, every finish selected, and every detail executed to create a vehicle that feels deeply authentic while elevated far beyond the ordinary.
At its core, this is a classic Land Rover with a richer sense of occasion. It retains the elemental charm and mechanical honesty that made the original so enduring, but introduces a level of finish, presence, and material quality that places it in an altogether different category.
The foundation of the build is as impressive as the final presentation. A new galvanised chassis has been installed, providing a lasting platform for the vehicle’s complete rebuild. The original axles, radius and trailing arms, along with the remaining steel chassis brackets, have all been stripped, shot-blasted and galvanised before reassembly using new bushes, washers, and stainless fixings throughout. Both differentials have been rebuilt by Ashcroft Engineering, while new half shafts, CVs, steering components and braking hardware ensure the driving experience feels every bit as resolved as the aesthetic.
Suspension has been carefully upgraded with Fox shocks, new springs, and a Bilstein steering damper, combining composure with capability. Braking performance has also been enhanced, with the front axle upgraded to vented LOF Engineering discs and pads, complemented by new calipers and galvanised back plates.
Under the bonnet, the Rover V8 has been treated to a full rebuild, paired with an Edelbrock carburettor to deliver the kind of character and response expected of a build of this calibre. The gearbox and transfer box have also undergone a full rebuild by Ashcroft Engineering, while new propshafts and a custom valved exhaust system complete the mechanical package. Finished with bronze ceramic-coated manifolds, the engine bay brings together performance, durability, and visual drama in equal measure.
Visually, the vehicle strikes an exceptional balance between heritage and individuality. LUCARI took the opportunity to finish the body in Lincoln Green, a colour more often associated with the Range Rover Classic of the era than the Defender itself. The result is subtle, sophisticated, and entirely fitting; a shade that gives the 90 an understated confidence while setting it apart from more expected period finishes.
The body restoration has been carried out to the same exacting standard as the chassis and driveline. A new galvanised bulkhead has been installed, joined by front galvanised half-height Series-style doors, a side-hinged galvanised half-height rear tailgate, and a heavy-duty galvanised hood stick set. A sand Stayfast full soft top with side windows completes the silhouette beautifully, lending the vehicle a lighter, more relaxed character while preserving its purposeful stance. The inclusion of a galvanised bulkhead deletion bar kit further enhances the open, pared-back feel of the build.
Exterior detailing has been kept clean, timeless, and carefully judged. A silver classic front grille with cast LUCARI badging, body-colour nose cone and headlamp surrounds, and a series of precision-machined aluminium elements all add subtle contrast against the Lincoln Green bodywork. The vehicle sits on a set of LUCARI 16” x 8” classic steel wheels finished in cream and wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres, a combination that gives the build exactly the right balance of utility and elegance.
Elsewhere, thoughtful detailing continues through the silver aluminium wing top and side vent set, billet-style mirror arms, and OPTIMILL security hinges fitted to the bonnet and doors. Signature LUCARI Iroko wood tread folding side steps and matching rear step introduce a level of warmth and material richness rarely seen in vehicles of this type, while reinforcing the handcrafted nature of the build.
Inside, the cabin has been transformed into a space that feels tactile, tailored, and entirely bespoke. Barley leather runs throughout the interior, bringing softness and depth to the seats, trim, gaiters, and pillar finishes. A pair of LUCARI fluted front seats set the tone immediately, joined by a matching Barley leather and Iroko wood armrest cubby, retrimmed dash panels, and leather-trimmed windscreen post finishes. The rear cabin continues the theme with a set of four inward-facing fluted Barley leather seats, creating a beautifully considered interior environment that feels both classic and luxurious.
Natural materials play a central role in the atmosphere of the cabin. LUCARI’s use of Iroko timber across the door cards, front floors and rear deck floor brings a warmth and character more often associated with high-end yacht detailing than traditional off-road vehicles. The engraved Iroko dash plaque and rear deck floor further emphasise the bespoke nature of the commission, while the wooden quick-release steering wheel introduces an unmistakable sense of craftsmanship from the driver’s seat.
Every detail has been treated as part of a wider composition, from the alloy gear and transfer knobs, to the hand-finished leather gaiters, roof lining sun visors, and custom interior light mount for the soft top. Nothing feels incidental. Everything has been chosen to contribute to a vehicle that is both beautifully resolved and deeply individual.
This is not simply a rebuilt Land Rover 90. It is a carefully curated expression of what a classic utility icon can become when restored with vision, elevated with restraint, and finished with genuine craftsmanship. Rugged, elegant, and unmistakably LUCARI, it is a vehicle for those who appreciate heritage, but expect far more than nostalgia alone.
